This recipe turns simple store-bought gnocchi into a restaurant-worthy baked dish. The gnocchi are first simmered in a garlicky, spicy tomato sauce, then baked under a blanket of mozzarella, parmesan, and fresh basil until bubbly and golden. The spicy kick from red pepper flakes complements the richness of the cheese, creating a satisfying comfort food that feels both classic and exciting.

Ingredients
- 1 pound (16 oz) potato gnocchi (store-bought or homemade)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- ½ cup heavy cream (optional, for a creamier sauce)
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add gnocchi and cook according to package instructions (usually until they float to the top, 2 – 3 minutes). Drain and set aside.
Step 2
In a large oven-safe skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and red pepper flakes, sautéing for about 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, and dried basil. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes to thicken slightly. Stir in the heavy cream and simmer another 2 minutes.
Step 3
Stir the cooked gnocchi into the sauce, coating evenly. Sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan over the top.
Step 4
Transfer the skillet or a baking dish to the oven. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Step 5
Remove from oven, let cool slightly, then top with basil leaves.
